Riley McGowan Accident Pendleton, OR Death – 21-Year-Old Killed After SUV Leaves I-84 and Catches Fire

PENDLETON, Ore. — Riley Finnegan McGowan, 21, of Woodinville, Washington, was killed Tuesday afternoon after an SUV left Interstate 84, became airborne and crashed onto Highway 395 before catching fire, according to Oregon State Police.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. Aug. 11 near the intersection of I-84 and Highway 395 in Umatilla County.

Police said the Honda CR-V was traveling eastbound on I-84 when it unexpectedly left the freeway. The vehicle entered the median and became airborne before landing on Highway 395. The SUV caught fire following the impact and was quickly engulfed in flames.

Troopers arriving at the scene were able to remove the driver, identified as 51-year-old Jeffrey Downer McGowan, from the burning vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Riley McGowan, who was riding as a passenger, sustained fatal injuries. Authorities pronounced the 21-year-old dead at the scene.

The circumstances that caused the Honda CR-V to leave the interstate have not been determined. Investigators have not indicated whether speed, mechanical problems, roadway conditions or another factor contributed to the crash.

The collision resulted in significant disruption along Highway 395, which was affected for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded, the vehicle was addressed and investigators documented the scene.

Several agencies assisted with the response, including the Pendleton Police Department, Pendleton Fire & Ambulance and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Oregon State Police continue to investigate the deadly crash. Officials are working to establish the events leading up to the SUV leaving I-84 and entering the median.

Riley McGowan’s death has left those affected by the crash facing the aftermath of a sudden loss. Further information is expected as investigators continue their work.
