Matthew Morey Missing Found Dead Muncie, IN Death, Obituary – Family Mourns Tragic Loss

MUNCIE, Ind. — The search for 18-year-old Matthew Morey remains suspended after he reportedly entered the rain-swollen Mississinewa River near Albany, Indiana, on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026.

Authorities said four people entered the river from an iron bridge along Gregory Road, northwest of Albany, shortly before emergency crews were called at approximately 8:30 p.m. Three people were located and brought to safety, while Morey remained missing.

Multiple agencies joined the search, including Delaware County sheriff’s deputies, Eaton and Albany police, firefighters, Indiana Department of Natural Resources personnel and Indiana State Police. Crews used boats, drones, riverbank search teams and an Indiana State Police helicopter while searching the water and surrounding area.

The operation was temporarily suspended around 12:30 a.m. Thursday before resuming at approximately 8 a.m. However, increasingly dangerous river conditions forced authorities to halt the search again around 2 p.m.

Officials cited rising water levels, swift currents and significant debris as major safety concerns for search crews. Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley said authorities would resume the operation when conditions allow, stressing that they would not give up the search.

Morey, who is associated with the Muncie area, has also been identified as a member of the Delta High School boys varsity basketball team, where he wore No. 20. His disappearance has prompted concern among friends, classmates, family members and members of the wider community.

A candlelight vigil for Matthew Morey is scheduled for Friday, August 14, at 8 p.m. at Union Chapel, 4622 North Broadway, Muncie, Indiana. The gathering will give loved ones and community members an opportunity to come together in support of his family.

At the time of publication, Morey remained missing, and authorities had not confirmed his whereabouts or condition.

The search is expected to continue when river conditions become safe enough for responders to return.
