Brad Smoliak Death, Edmonton, ALB Obituary – KITCHEN Owner and Chef Remembered

The Edmonton, Alberta, community is mourning the passing of Brad Smoliak, beloved owner and chef of KITCHEN, whose life was defined by resilience, creativity and an enduring passion for bringing people together through food.

Brad’s life began with extraordinary medical challenges. Born with transposition of the great vessels, a congenital heart condition, he underwent his first surgery at just 11 days old at the University of Alberta Hospital. At five, he underwent the Mustard procedure at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

Despite those challenges, Brad grew into a vibrant and determined man who pursued his love of cooking and built a life around his restaurant and community.

His heart condition became increasingly difficult in adulthood. After years of medical treatment and hospitalizations, Brad’s heart reached advanced-stage failure by 2019. On January 18, 2019, he received a ventricular assist device (VAD), providing critical support and giving him renewed strength.

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute played an important role in his medical journey. His family’s gratitude for the medical professionals who cared for him remains an important part of his story.

Beyond medicine, Brad was known for his work as a chef and restaurant owner. Through KITCHEN, he had an opportunity to share his creativity, passion and love of food with Edmonton.

His story was ultimately about much more than illness. It was about perseverance, hope and refusing to allow difficult circumstances to define an entire life.

Brad’s family has encouraged those wishing to honor his legacy to consider supporting the University Hospital Foundation, particularly initiatives connected with the VAD program at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
