British character actress Cheryl Hall, best known for playing Shirley in the BBC sitcom Citizen Smith, has died aged 76. Hall died on August 9, 2026, according to the information provided.

Born Cheryl Georgette Hall in Whitechapel, East London, on July 23, 1950, Hall grew up in nearby Bethnal Green before pursuing acting at the Corona Theatre School. She began building her television career in the late 1960s, making her screen debut in You and the World in 1968.

Her early career included appearances in Special Branch, Sykes, On the Buses, Callan, Public Eye and Crown Court. She also appeared in the Doctor Who story Carnival of Monsters, a role she secured after previously auditioning for the part of Jo Grant.

Hall became increasingly familiar to television audiences during the 1970s. She appeared in Lucky Feller alongside David Jason and also worked on the daytime drama Rooms. However, her best-known role came in John Sullivan’s Citizen Smith, which premiered in 1977. Hall played the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay’s Wolfie Smith and became closely associated with the popular sitcom.

She continued working throughout the following decades, appearing in productions including EastEnders, Inspector Morse, Grange Hill, London’s Burning and The Bill. Between 1984 and 2007, she portrayed several different characters in The Bill. Her final television appearance came in 2007.

Hall also pursued a career in politics. In 1993, she won a seat on Kent County Council for Labour, later standing as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Canterbury at the 1997 general election.

Hall retired in 2010 and later moved to Greece.

Her former partner Robin Askwith announced her death on August 12, paying tribute to Hall as a charismatic and courageous actress who had made a lasting impression on British television.
