The Calgary hockey community is mourning the death of Peter Maher, the longtime radio voice of the Calgary Flames, who has died at the age of 79.

Maher spent more than three decades behind the microphone, calling 33 consecutive seasons of Calgary Flames hockey after joining the organization in 1980. For generations of fans, his voice became synonymous with some of the most memorable moments in franchise history, including the Flames’ 1989 Stanley Cup championship and their remarkable run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

Known for his passion, professionalism and signature catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”, Maher became one of the most recognizable figures in Canadian sports broadcasting. His energetic calls and love for the game made him a beloved part of the Calgary sports landscape.

Born and raised in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher began his broadcasting career in eastern Canada before moving west when the Flames relocated from Atlanta to Calgary ahead of the 1980-81 NHL season. What followed was a Hall of Fame career that earned him the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.

Following his retirement after the 2013-14 season, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named in his honor, recognizing the lasting impact he had on the organization and its supporters.
